People are obsessed with what congresswomen-select Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wears. To achieve this, she changed to knocking on numerous doorways in the 14th congressional district of New York. Like any practical person in this example, she wished an at-ease pair of shoes.
That footwear is currently part of an exhibition on the Cornell Costume and Textile Collection in New York titled “Women Empowered: Fashions from the Frontline.” It will open on Dec. 6 and is centered at the “bodily spaces in which empowerment would possibly arise: the sports arena, the road, level, academy, and the government,” Jenny Leigh Du Puis, Cornell graduate student and member of the curatorial team, said. “In every one of those public spaces, women have used style to conquer barriers, turn out to be visible, and percentage their voice.”
The congresswoman’s worn-out kicks will take a seat alongside some of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s iconic collars, a skirt suit worn by the first girl US lawyer fashionable Janet Reno, gowns and accessories worn via suffragettes, and more.
Ocasio-Cortez’s shoes first attracted attention in June when she tweeted an image in their dilapidated, worn-thru soles in reaction to critics who claimed her victory in opposition to longtime House Democrat Joe Crowley turned down to mere demographics.
